Karl Lines voiced his concerns about potentially losing his vision while facing a wait of up to four years for a crucial NHS surgery.

Mr. Lines has already experienced a significant loss of vision in his left eye due to a developed cataract.

A cataract is a medical condition that occurs when the clear part of the eye (known as the lens) develops cloudy patches.

With time, this condition progresses and can ultimately result in blindness if left untreated without surgery.

He first experienced changes in his vision back in December 2022 and visited an optician to find out what the issue was.

Following his initial appointment, Karl was advised to return to his optician who informed him that cataracts had developed, with his left eye showing a slightly worse condition in comparison to his right eye.

As an award -winning artist, author, and photographer, having this condition has been difficult for the father of two. Speaking to Express.co.uk, Karl said: “I will admit I have been grossly disheartened by it, very scared, very apprehensive about driving and mobility issues. While I am currently still able to make out larger shapes in the vision, when using just my left eye, a lot of details are now gone or are being filled in by my brain (as if to say I know an eye needs to go on this face here, so I “see” an eye there, etc). “

Mr Lines’ opticians have referred him for a surgery twice, however he’s been notified that he may need to wait up to four years to have his surgery.

The possibility of having the surgery carried out privately is currently not feasible as it would cost around three thousand pounds, a sum that Karl and his wife Charlotte cannot afford.
