Tracey Jane Edge, aged 56, from Bicester has been awarded £7,000 in compensation from her former dentist.
Mrs. Edge sought treatment at Aylesbury’s Watermead Dental Centre under Dr. Lythan Davies due to persistent discomfort and a constant dull ache in her tooth. Despite undergoing root canal treatment across five appointments, Mrs. Edge remained puzzled by persistent pain, considering the supposed removal of the nerve.
Expressing her frustration, Mrs. Edge stated, “I decided I wanted a second opinion. I had even started to wonder if it was all in my head as I shouldn’t be in pain if the nerve was removed. But within five minutes, my new dentist spotted the problem and saw there was an abscess under my tooth. I had informed her that the tooth was beyond economical repair and required extraction.”
Upon presenting her new dentist’s findings to Dr. Davies, the affected tooth underwent extraction. This not only validated her concerns but also provided momentary relief from the persistent pain.
However, complications emerged when the extraction process resulted in a flap of gum that trapped food. Mrs. Edge vividly recalls her embarrassment when her dentist removed a melon pip from beneath her gum.
In 2018, after enduring two years of suffering, Mrs. Edge decided to reach out to the Dental Law Partnership where she managed to receive compensation.
Had Dr. Davies accurately diagnosed the tooth decay affecting two of her teeth, Mrs. Edge could have avoided a root canal treatment, alleviated two years of discomfort, and possibly prevented the need for tooth extraction. This serves as a reminder of the crucial role accurate and thorough dental assessments play in ensuring patients receive appropriate and effective care.
