Woman Awaits Apology Nine Years After NHS Negligence Leads to Amputation

A woman from Seaford, has yet to receive an apology after medical negligence by two NHS Trusts led to the amputation of her lower right leg.

Despite a settlement with University Hospitals Sussex (UHSussex) and East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (ESHT), Ms Karen Webb, 54, still seeks acknowledgment for her experience.

In 2014 and 2015, Ms Webb’s ulcer went untreated at Royal Sussex County Hospital and Eastbourne District General Hospital despite assurances it wasn’t infected. By 2017, the ulcer had worsened so much that her lower leg had to be amputated. “An apology, just to hear them saying sorry, would have made such a difference to my recovery,” Ms Webb said. “Even now, nine years on, it’s something that would help. I would love that to happen. It would be so important to me to hear them acknowledge what they did, to meet me and just say, ‘We are sorry’.

Ms Webb’s representatives stressed the importance of an apology for emotional healing. “While her settlement gives her some financial security, an apology would truly help her to move on with her life and get the closure she so badly wants,” a spokesperson said.

UHSussex and ESHT issued a joint statement: “We reached a settlement in this case and wish Mrs. Webb well for the future. We are always willing to meet with patients if they are unhappy with their care.”
