A mother, Jade Ellis, 36, died of a heart attack caused by a blood clot shortly after being sent home from Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend, prompting claims of hospital malpractice.
Ms. Ellis was discharged “within half an hour” despite having chest pains. She died in her 18-year-old son’s arms shortly after returning home in March 2020.
Ms. Ellis’s son, Brandon, began CPR while speaking to a paramedic over the phone, desperately waiting for an ambulance to arrive at their home in Cwmavon, Neath Port Talbot, but his efforts were in vain.
Her daughter, Deanna Ellis, 20, recounted the trauma of finding her mother unresponsive on the bedroom floor. “I ran upstairs to see her, I collapsed,” she said. “It took two or three people to get me off her because she just wasn’t waking up.”
The Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board has issued an apology to the family, who have since been awarded £160,000 in medical negligence compensation, with £30,000 of that amount covering legal fees, according to BBC News.
Ms. Ellis’s mother, Sandra Bartlett, criticised the hospital’s handling of the situation, stating that a simple blood test could have prevented her daughter’s death. “The NHS is an amazing service, but they failed my daughter,” Ms. Bartlett said.
The health board extended its “heartfelt condolences” to the family, acknowledging that Ms. Ellis’s care did not meet the “high standards” expected. NHS Wales declined further comment on the case.
