Thousands of children in England are facing severe delays in NHS care, with waiting times stretching up to three years, a new report by NHS Providers reveals.

This situation has prompted concerns that a “forgotten generation” of young people will suffer long-term harm due to inadequate access to essential healthcare services. The report highlights a significant inability of NHS trusts to meet the rising demand for children’s and young people’s services, aggravated by increasingly complex healthcare needs. Delays in accessing basic healthcare such as autism assessments, speech therapy, and medical treatments are negatively impacting children’s development, educational attainment, and mental health.

Rising Demand and Critical Shortages Strain Children’s Healthcare Services

According to NHS Providers, 82% of trusts surveyed reported being unable to keep up with current service demands. Sir Julian Hartley, CEO of NHS Providers, expressed deep concern, stating, “Too many young lives are being blighted by delays to accessing vital NHS care. We’re in danger of seeing a forgotten generation of young people.”

This study follows earlier reports by The Guardian highlighting a crisis in child health across England. Recent data revealed a sharp increase in children needing emergency mental healthcare, underscoring a growing epidemic of poor diets and health conditions among young people.

Key challenges identified in the NHS Providers report include the complexity and severity of children’s health conditions, inadequate service provision, and a critical shortage of healthcare staff. These factors not only impact immediate healthcare delivery but also contribute to widening health inequalities.

Sir Julian Hartley also emphasised the far-reaching implications of prolonged waiting times on children’s social development and educational outcomes. He called for robust governmental and NHS commitments to prioritise children’s physical and mental health, ensuring adequate staffing levels to deliver timely and safe healthcare.

This report highlights the need for reforms and more support for NHS leaders to improve healthcare services for children and young people in England. The current delays and issues in care are raising concerns and suggest that prompt action is needed to ensure better protection for young people’s health.
