Data from the NHS shows that three Never Events were recorded between April and November last year at a Homerton hospital which included kidney stones and gastric tubes according to an article from LondonWorld. In addition to this, there were two other incidents which involved a hormonal coil being used instead of a non – hormonal coil, while another involved a naso – gastric tube being incorrectly sited in the right bronchus.

Never Events are defined as “serious, largely preventable patient safety incidents that should not occur if healthcare providers have implemented existing national guidance or safety recommendations.” The Care Quality Commission (CQC) have previously given Homerton Hospital an overall ‘outstanding’ rating. However, a medical negligence law firm revealed these findings in relation after requesting information to hospital trusts.

A spokesperson from Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundatation stated, “The safety of our patients is our number one priority and we ensure our staff are appropriately trained and supported to offer the best possible care. Despite this, unfortunately incidents do occur and we would like to apologise to the patients and the families affected. Each event is fully investigated and reported to the appropriate authorities.”
