Former Doctor Banned After Leaving Baby with Brain Damage

A former doctor has been indefinitely banned from reapplying to the medical register after a series of serious incidents, including leaving a baby with a brain injury and a skull fracture during birth.

Dr Ahmed Loutfi’s second attempt to be reinstated as a practicing doctor was rejected by a tribunal. Dr Loutfi faced a fitness to practice hearing in 2016, which resulted in his initial removal from the medical register. The hearing investigated misconduct allegations spanning his tenure at hospitals in Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, and Hull.

One of the incidents involved Dr Loutfi improperly manipulating a baby’s head with forceps during childbirth at Birmingham Women’s Hospital in May 2013. This action resulted in the infant sustaining a brain injury and a depressed skull fracture.

Investigation Unveils Medical Failures

According to BBC News, further scrutiny revealed another troubling incident at Liverpool Women’s Hospital in April 2010. Dr Loutfi incorrectly diagnosed a patient with an incomplete miscarriage, overlooking signs of an ectopic pregnancy. Despite previous scans indicating otherwise, he advised the patient on two occasions to go home, with tragic consequences ensuing when the ectopic pregnancy was later discovered, necessitating emergency surgery.

In another critical lapse at St Mary’s Hospital in Manchester in October 2011, Dr Loutfi ignored clear indicators of severe fetal distress during labour. Despite a fetal blood sample suggesting urgent delivery via Caesarean section, he opted for vaginal delivery, resulting in a ruptured uterus for the mother, who subsequently required an emergency hysterectomy.

The tribunal also found that Dr Loutfi failed to disclose a prior warning stemming from a fitness to practice hearing in 2010, related to an assault on a colleague.

Following his second attempt to regain his medical license, the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service concluded in June that Dr Loutfi’s fitness to practice remained in question. As a result, his right to reapply for restoration to the medical register has been indefinitely suspended.

The case highlights the crucial need for strong oversight and accountability in the medical field, especially regarding patient safety and ethical standards.
