Bristol Live has reported on Ivy Dash, a former tobacco scientist who sadly passed away from Mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure.
Ivy worked for Imperial Tobacco between 1969 -1982. Her role was to analyse the contents of cigarette smoke in the lab. Her family is eager to find out how asbestos was exposed to her during her time working with the company. Martin, Ivy’s son states “We think she could have been exposed at work in one of two ways. One of these is in her regular daily activities, as one of her responsibilities was to load a drum that smoked the cigarettes to measure the tar and other contents within the cigarettes. We know from discussions with Mum that the room had no windows and no ventilation. So, when she came home from work she smelled strongly of tobacco, and this went on for years and years.”
Another suspicion is that she was exposed to asbestos due to the fireproof cladding which may have been used in the factory. The family has requested for Imperial Brands to provide details of the location of cladding within the building but have been ignored.
Rebecca Ryan, a specialist asbestos solicitor, has been instructed by the family so they can get justice for Ivy. In a statement, Ryan said “Unfortunately, thousands of people die each year as a result of just going about their everyday lives, working to make a living and being exposed to asbestos dust. Ivy’s family was extremely upset to learn that Ivy’s premature death was caused by exposure to asbestos, and we are really hoping that this appeal for information will help us find some answers for them.”
In response to this, A spokesman for Imperial Brands has said “We do not have any record of contact from Novum Law with regard to Ivy.” This was after Bristol Live asked for a comment in relation to Ivy potentially being exposed to asbestos by the company which led to her developing Mesothelioma.
