The Homerton Fertility Centre in London has had its operating license suspended by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) due to “significant concerns” regarding the clinic’s operations.

This action follows three incidents involving errors in freezing processes, resulting in the loss of embryos, raising concerns about IVF negligence cases and fertility negligence.

The clinic, under the oversight of the Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, initiated an investigation in late 2023 after promptly notifying regulators. While ongoing treatment cycles continue, new procedures have been paused as investigations unfold. Measures such as enhanced staff supervision and security have been introduced to prevent future occurrences of fertility negligence.

Louise Ashley, Chief Executive of Homerton Fertility Centre, conveyed apologies to all patients affected by these incidents, emphasising ongoing support despite the license suspension. Although the Metropolitan Police confirmed attendance at the clinic, they stated no active investigation is underway. Peter Thompson, CEO of HFEA, assured patients of minimal disruption to their treatment.

This development underscores broader concerns about fertility procedures, echoing similar issues in London and Sheffield, and emphasising the urgent need for accountability, particularly regarding pregnancy and fertility negligence.
