Brighton’s Royal Sussex County Hospital is under pressure to suspend surgeons whose operations are currently under police investigation.

Sussex police are conducting a widening inquiry into alleged medical negligence and cover-ups, with cases dating from 2015 to 2021, involving over 100 patients, including at least 40 deaths.

Despite the ongoing investigation, University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is resisting calls for suspension, expressing confidence in the surgeons.

Families of affected patients and campaigners are demanding a halt to the surgeons’ duties during the inquiry.

Sussex police have been conducting Operation Bamber since June and are yet to formally inform families of the patients involved. However, some have been told that family liaison officers will be appointed to support them.

Concerns have been raised about a neurosurgeon, involved in the investigation, who is still operating on patients. A letter from a patient’s family to the trust expressing alarm received a response insisting that the matter is for the police to disclose, denying specific investigations into individual surgeons.

The inquiry stems from a 2021 dossier outlining troubling cases in the neurosurgery department, with Mansoor Foroughi, a whistleblower, being dismissed in 2021. His allegations, along with those of another consultant, Krishna Singh, triggered the police investigation. Three neurosurgeons named in the dossier are still employed by the trust, prompting anxiety among patients and their families.
