Although she complained about a leak in her bathroom several times, Daisy Lovering, 22, had a lucky escape when her entire ceiling collapsed, inches away from where she was standing. Residing in Neath Port Talbot, Daisy noticed damp in her ground floor flat at the start of February which pushed her to get in touch with her local Housing Association Tai Tarian.
Despite owning more than 9000 properties in the borough, making it one of the biggest Housing Associations in Wales, Tai Tarian failed to attend to the matter raised by Miss Lovering. On the night of Saturday 25th of February, Daisy decided to get out of bed to investigate the issue as she kept waking up due to the dripping noise of the leak that had emerged. According to WalesOnline, whilst in the bathroom, a storm of fiberglass and wood came crashing down towards her, only just missing her.
The 22-year-old has a daughter and felt her child’s health was in danger as things kept on getting worse. She stated, “The smell in the bathroom was terrible though and I was worried it might start affecting Darcey’s health. Then, quite late on the weekend, I got up to have a look at it and – ‘Bang!’ – the lot came down right in front of me.”
According to Daisy, no one answered when she attempted to speak to someone through the Housing Association 24- hour helpline. Despite the clean-up team coming over to clean up the damage that occurred when the roof fell, a new problem has emerged and is unlikely to get resolved.
The Head of Property and Land Services for Tai Tarian has since commented on this issue. She states, “Miss Lovering first reported an issue in early February. At that stage we had not been made aware of a leak. We planned a visit with her but had to reschedule. Officers did attend on a second occasion but couldn’t get access – we had been unable to make contact by telephone. Miss Lovering got back in touch with us to say that she thought there may be a leak from an upstairs property, which is privately-owned. A visit was scheduled for this week but, unfortunately, the damage to the ceiling occurred over the weekend.”
