Asbestosis was the cause of death for Woolpit man, an inquest hears

In March 2022, John Wright, an 81-year-old from Ipswich, was diagnosed with asbestosis several months before his death. During his tenure as a labourer and builder, John reportedly encountered potential exposure to asbestos. The mineral was frequently employed in fireproofing and insulation applications before its prohibition in 1999, making it readily available in the past but now deemed illegal for purchase or sale due to its severe health hazards.

Asbestos poses a significant danger due to its ability to break down into minuscule particles that can linger in the air for extended periods, even up to days. When these particles are inhaled, they can traverse into the depths of a person’s lungs, becoming embedded in the delicate lung tissue. This presence of asbestos fibers within the lungs can lead to serious health complications over time.

Mr. Wright’s health rapidly deteriorated, reaching a critical point of acute illness. This prompted a discussion with his family, to finally decide to transition Mr. Wright into end-of-life care according to the East Anglian Daily Times.

The care he received was provided at the West Suffolk Hospital, located in Bury St. Edmunds. Tragically, on December 30th, following his diagnosis 9-month earlier, Mr. Wright passed away.
