An A&E doctor has been struck off after misdiagnosing a patient who subsequently died, and then making efforts to conceal the mistake.

Dr. Allen Demanya, formerly of Royal Glamorgan Hospital near Talbot Green, was found to have lied to a coroner following the patient’s death, according to a medical tribunal.

The incident occurred in February 2019 when Dr. Demanya, working as a locum middle-grade doctor, attended to a 75-year-old woman exhibiting symptoms of diarrhoea, fever, and low blood pressure. Despite indications of possible sepsis, Dr. Demanya diagnosed gastroenteritis and prescribed medication. Tragically, the patient died the following day.

Expert witnesses testified that Dr. Demanya failed to diagnose sepsis and neglected to communicate the gravity of the patient’s condition to colleagues. Subsequent investigations revealed discrepancies in Dr. Demanya’s treatment plan, including delayed administration of antibiotics and omission of necessary interventions.

Dr. Demanya’s actions were deemed a serious breach of professional conduct, leading to his removal from the medical register. While acknowledging some evidence of insight, the tribunal concluded that his actions had severely undermined public confidence in the medical profession and posed a risk to public safety.

This case underscores the critical importance of accurate diagnosis and transparent communication in medical practice, as well as the need for robust oversight to maintain patient safety.
