Emme and her mother Carly were forced to move out of their house in Swindon due to the damp issues they faced when renting their property from Stonewater Housing.

Emme’s consultant, Dr Paul O’Keefe, wrote a letter to urge the council to help them. Dr O’Keefe said: “Individuals with cystic fibrosis struggle to clear secretions from their chest and it is very important that they are in an environment that is free from dust, moulds and other particulate matter. I was very concerned to hear about and to see pictures of the current state of the house.”

On November 2021, Carly reported her first issue to Stonewater Housing when she discovered a water leak in her property. Unfortunately, the firm was unable to locate the source of the leak. However, on the 31st of December, Carly’s kitchen ceiling collapsed as a consequence of the unresolved problem. Although the kitchen was repaired after this, the family believe that the dust from the fresh plasterwork is still an issue for them.

According to Carly, Emme has been on a continuous course of antibiotics since October due to a persistent wet cough. Additionally, Carly mentioned that her 12-year-old son, Hayden, has been experiencing severe asthma symptoms since they moved back into the house. Although declining to be interviewed, Stonewater Housing told the BBC that they visited the property more than 30 time in order to look for signs of damp or mould but concluded there were no signs of these after paying for a report by a structural engineer which confirmed this on February 2023.

The council’s response was that it as a “complex case.”  They added: “We are listening and doing all we can to help.”
