A family from Basildon in Essex were moved into a hotel after their seven-month-old baby, Teddy, was admitted to hospital due to breathing difficulties. The hospital was able to link the child’s breathing problems to the excessive amount of mould in their rented flat, managed by Clarion Housing. Since then, Francesca Ward and her family have been moved six times in six weeks.
Ms Ward, 31, who is a specialist computer room cleaner has described the experience as “a living nightmare” and added, “I feel completely and utterly drained from it all – it’s just so stressful.” The family was placed in a Holiday Inn on the 6th of January with the promise that the issue was going to be resolved by the 15th of February, only to be told that more checks were to be done. Living in these hotels (paid for by Clarion Housing), has meant that the family of four have had to share one room, with their daughter sleeping on a sofa bed.
Clarion has since provided more information in relation to this, according to BBC News. They confirmed that they were preparing a new property for the family as they were already on a waiting list. They stated: “We apologise that the work currently under way in Ms Ward’s home has been delayed. We have identified that some further checks are required and we are prioritising this case so the household can return home as soon as possible.”
The family’s situation was described as ‘ clearly unacceptable’ by the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities due to the way the matter has been handled.
