Women’s experiences with maternity services have raised a health watchdog’s alarm after recent findings have shown a “concerning decline” in relation to the care provided to mothers during labour and childbirth. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) have found “deterioration” in the ratings women gave their care over the last five years after a new national poll showed a significant decline on most measures examined to assess maternity care across the country.
Many women felt disappointed at the amount of time provided for their partner to stay with them after the delivery of their baby and others reported they felt they weren’t being listened to when concerns were raised to members of staff. Ratings also went down when it came to women feeling respected, treated with dignity and provided with the right amount of information, according to The Guardian.
Here are some results of the national survey, taken from 21000 (in 2022) from women across England who had received care at one of 121 NHS trusts:
- Women were unlikely to report that they were always able to get the help they needed during labour and birth falling to 63% in 2022 in comparison to 72% in 2019.
- Around 90% revealed that their partners or someone else could be involved as much as they wanted in comparison to 96% in 2017.
- About 77% confirmed they felt were taken seriously when raising a concern during labour and birth in comparison to 81% in 2017.
- Around 63% revealed that they got help and advice about their baby’s health and their progress in comparison to 71% in 2017.
The Deputy Chief Inspector of the CQC, Victoria Vallance said, “These results show that far too many women feel their care could have been better. The trend analysis carried out this year reveals a concerning decline over time, particularly in relation to accessing information and support and getting help when it was most needed.”
