Patients left in pain as waiting times increase

By February 9, 2024 No Comments

A recent report by the Public Services Ombudsman for Wales exposes prolonged waits exceeding five years for surgeries due to errors by Swansea Bay Health Board.

The Health Board’s mistakes, especially regarding knee and hip surgeries, led to unfair treatment of patients, triggering an investigation. The Health Board has apologised and accepted recommendations.

The report questions the overall management of the Health Board’s waiting lists, revealing instances of “clear injustice” to patients. Patients experienced severe pain due to extended waits since 2018, raising concerns about the impact on well-being.

Swansea Bay Health Board, already under increased Welsh government oversight, acknowledges the delays, apologises to affected patients and is implementing measures to rectify errors and prevent recurrence. A review of decisions and auditing of waiting lists are underway.

The report underscores the critical need for improved management of waiting lists to prevent undue delays and injustice to patients. The Health Board’s commitment to implementing recommendations and reviewing its processes is crucial for restoring confidence in the healthcare system. As the government takes action to address the specific issues and prevent their recurrence, a collective effort is needed to ensure timely and fair treatment for patients awaiting surgeries.
