Lister Hospital in Stevenage have seen their rating drop from good to inadequate after the CQC inspected their maternity unit. The inspection, which occurred in October, found that the standards of care provided to women and babies didn’t meet the expected level of service that’s required.
A report has highlighted that while all workers were trained, “steps were not taken to ensure everyone completed it”. In addition to this, the report also highlights that there were insufficient staff to provide the adequate care patients need. When required, people were unable to access the service and risk assessments for women were not always carried out, as stated by an article by the BBC.
Nevertheless, the same report found some good practises such as teamwork and “improvement, research and innovation were prioritised”. Putting everything together has resulted to a warning notice, meaning that the trust must take action and improve their services to avoid further enforcement action. Carolyn Jenkinson, head of hospital inspection at the CQC reported: “There were key points raised [at the inquest] around CTG [cardiotocograph] monitoring, training for that CTG monitoring and then the equipment. And both of those things, exactly the same things have come up again, that the training is still inadequate and there is not enough [equipment] available.”
In January 2019, a baby died at the Lister Hospital maternity unit a day after he was born. Failure to recognise birth defect led to the death of baby Eddie who died of asphyxia during labour, an inquest heard. The mother of the baby, Hanna Coffey said: “There were key points raised [at the inquest] around CTG [cardiotocograph] monitoring, training for that CTG monitoring and then the equipment.”
