The parents of three-month-old girl Felicity Chappell found themselves in a distressing situation. After being discharged from the hospital, Felicity had to be taken back to the A&E just 24 hours later. Joshua Chappell and his partner Lucy faced a waiting time of 4 hours for an ambulance, which never arrived even after they decided to drive their daughter to the hospital themselves.

Felicity was diagnosed with bronchiolitis after displaying respiratory problems, which the doctors prescribed saline solution for, to be picked up at a pharmacy near the Royal Stoke University Hospital.  However, as the parents went to pick up their daughter’s prescription, they were advised to go back to hospital immediately by the pharmacist.

Via StokeonTrentLive,  the 25-year-old father states: “The pharmacist asked to see Felicity. He turned around and said, ‘take her to the doctors and don’t leave until she’s got an appointment’. He said, ‘she needs to see someone urgently’. It was quite scary. We had put our trust in the hospital doctor, she just had bronchiolitis and she was going to be OK, and then another healthcare professional is saying she needs urgent care.”

The family were seen straight away at the Allen Street Clinic, where the GP called 999 and Felicity returned to Royal Stoke. She was then diagnosed with respiratory syncytial virus and kept the hospital for another 10 days due to the seriousness of her illness. Although baby Felicity is now at home and on the mend, concerns have risen from this incident as her parents feels they were let down by the NHS and they could have lost their daughter as a result.

Lucy said “We put our faith in doctors to do what’s best for our baby and, on this occasion, I believe corners were cut. The NHS is under extreme pressure, and it will cost lives. If I hadn’t asked for a second opinion from our GP the following day, our daughter may not have survived, which is an absolutely terrifying thought. The whole event has knocked our confidence in the NHS.”
