Millions of pounds remain unclaimed from a compensation scheme set up for workers exposed to asbestos at a Wigan factory.
Turner and Newall went into administration in 2001 due to legal claims against them after hundreds of workers were exposed to asbestos, which led to the company being financially crippled. Ex-workers, who have been exposed to asbestos during their time with the company, are now being urged to claim compensation out of a £100m compensation scheme that was set up by administrators.
A case study shows that a family awarded £93,000 following a mother’s death. Susan Bellamy (not her real name) worked as a winder for 6 years in Hindley Green, Wigan. Throughout her time working for Turner and Newall, she was exposed to asbestos due to completing tasks such as cleaning her machine with a hand brush which caused asbestos to be in the atmosphere and ultimately inhaled by Susan.
In May 2017, she was sadly diagnosed with Mesothelioma which is a form of asbestos-related cancer. In November 2018, Mrs. Bellamy sadly passed away with the cause of death being concluded as Mesothelioma, Asbestosis, and asbestos exposure with a conclusion of industrial disease.
Stephensons, a solicitor from Wigan, helped the family claim compensation and they were awarded a total of £93,000 from the compensation scheme. Sarah Maters, associate solicitor in the Personal Injury team at Stephensons said “There are more than 2500 cases of mesothelioma diagnosed in the UK each year, with the great majority of these caused by exposure to asbestos and in most cases, that exposure has been in the workplace.”
