The Hull Daily Mail has reported that a 63-year-old from Hull was awarded a compensation of £18500 in damages after suffering a back injury due to falling at a Cottingham Caravan factory.

Andrew Melton, from Hull, was leaving a caravan on the production line when he slipped and fell on his back, causing him to pick up a serious injury.  This forced him to early retirement as he was no longer able to return to work,  with four fractures to the transverse process (which is where ligaments and muscles attach to the spinal vertebrae). The former caravan worker said he currently still suffers from severe back problems which make it difficult for him to sleep and constantly suffers from muscle spasm.

During the legal case, it was reported that the same company had five other incidents involving the use of steps in the same year Andrew had his accident.  Allegedly, the accidents were foreseeable due to steps being unsuitable, according to the solicitors who led the claim in 2019 (3 years before the accident).

Andrew was disappointed with his employers as they did not make any formal admission of fault of either his fall or injury. He stated, “I knew it was serious when it happened,” he said, “but, in my opinion, there was very little aftercare shown. In fact, they tried to suggest in their statements that I’d said that I was to blame myself for it happening. That was not the case at all. It transpired that a number of other people had also had incidents involving the steps in the months previous, so it was an issue that was not dealt with.”
