It has been reported over the past couple months that the Watchdog have placed The Burton Park Hospital, in Melton, Leicestershire in “special measures” by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) amid a catalogue of criticisms.
The CQC will now carry out unannounced inspections on the Leicestershire hospital during the next 12 months and report on its findings.
The CQC inspection was carried out in March 2021 and its report was published in June. Click to find The Burton Park Hospital CQC report. The report listed many issues with the hospital including:
- Hospital failed to act on allegations of abuse of patients
- Inadequate COVID-19 measures in place
- Hospital failed to admit to its mistakes and no apology over the death of a patient, failing its duty of candour
- Poor Leadership – finding that managers failed to ensure there was a sufficient number of staff to meet the needs of patients
Head of Inspection for Mental Health and Community Services at the CQC said:
“Care at Burton Park did not meet standards people should be able to expect because it suffered from poor leadership. Staff were insufficiently supervised, and managers failed to understand the issues the service faced. This, along with a lack of respect shown by leaders towards staff, created a negative culture where policies to ensure people’s safety were not successfully implemented or monitored….”
“We are monitoring the hospital closely and will take further action to protect people if we are not assured care is being delivered safely.”
The hospital have quoted:
“We have been working closely with colleagues to address all the issues raised by the CQC and substantial improvements in performance, and the delivery of care, have already been made.”
