A 47-year-old man employed as a tech specialist for the North West Ambulance Service has been awarded £16,750 in compensation from his previous dental practice. The compensation was granted as a result of undiagnosed issues that led to the man experiencing tooth loss and severe pain. Dene Hemsworth, who regularly attended the Standish Dental Practice between 2010 and 2019, was a regular patient when he started having issues with his teeth. During appointments, Mr Hemsworth was given multiple fillings, scale and polishes with some antibiotics.
Once he moved to a different city in 2019, he began to visit another dental practice due to continued pain, despite having attended his previous appointments regularly. The new practice diagnosed him with severe tooth decay, periodontal disease and a retained tooth root, which explained why he kept having severe pain.
Unfortunately, due to dental negligence by his previous dentist, his teeth had to be extracted by his new dentist. Speaking to Wigan Today, The 47-year- old says, “The decay was so severe, the only way to treat it was to have teeth extracted, and the periodontal disease was also extremely advanced which has caused significant gum and bone loss that has, over time, drastically affected my ability to eat. I was shocked that this had not been treated, or even mentioned, by my previous practice.”
After contacting solicitors to submit his dental negligence claim, the extent of the poor care Mr Hemsworth received was revealed, after further analysis was carried out. In addition to this, he stated that he was being told that the fault was actually his. Mr Hemsworth says, “I was astounded that I had been blamed for the issues I was experiencing to then find out the extent of how poor the dental care I had received was.”
